Metal detector technologies: VLF, multi-frequency and PI.
Start with your soil, target, interference and water exposure. A technology label does not guarantee recovery depth, discrimination or the right coil.
What the technology label tells you—and what it does not
Single or selectable frequency: one supported frequency is active. Available choices can change by detector and search mode; the EQUINOX 700/900 manual, for example, makes Multi the only frequency option in Beach mode.
Simultaneous multi-frequency: the selected profile processes more than one frequency together. That does not mean every multi-frequency profile uses the same weighting, controls or firmware behavior.
Pulse induction: the detector transmits pulses and analyzes the timed response. The label alone does not establish target identification, ferrous handling or recovery depth.
Compare the exact detector, mode, firmware and coil. Read water ratings for the control box, coil and headphones separately, and treat any depth or target result as specific to its recorded conditions.

VLF and selectable frequency
Very low frequency designs use a transmitted field and a received target response. A selectable-frequency setting uses the frequency you choose; it does not by itself mean several frequencies operate together. Check the exact model’s available modes and controls.
A simultaneous mode combines more than one operating frequency. EQUINOX 700/900 also offers single-frequency choices; available choices depend on model and mode. Compare real mode behavior using the original Minelab frequency section, not a claim that every setting works equally everywhere.
Nokta The Legend is another manufacturer-labeled simultaneous multi-frequency example. Match the original Legend to its own manual, not Legend2.
Pulse induction and specialized systems
Pulse systems excite the coil in pulses and assess the changing response. Do not assume every PI provides the same target identification or rejection controls. Compare the exact manufacturer specifications and manual for the conditions you intend to search.
GPX 6000 specifications distinguish a coil waterproof to 1 m from a detector rated for splash and rain. It is not a whole-detector diving example. Read coil, control-box, connector and headphone limits separately before exposing any equipment to water. Manufacturer water-exposure limits.
Check coil compatibility and control names
Confirm an exact detector/coil pairing in SSL’s equipment references or original documentation. XP’s Reactivity control and another model’s recovery speed are not interchangeable numeric recipes. Use the XP original manual hub for the named detector and firmware.
Read your mode’s discrimination tradeoffs and test changes one at a time. The settings guide and signal-reading guide explain how to keep results useful without inventing certainty.
